Super Smash Predictions

Here are our Super Smash betting tips and predictions, which could help you place smarter bets!

  • With a balanced side and the best T20 players in their ranks with a good record in the Super Smash, both the Northern Brave and Wellington Firebirds have the best chance of winning the tournament.
  • The Canterbury Kings and Auckland Aces are the other two sides that have the potential to finish in the top three.
  • Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Glenn Phillips can come out as the top batters of the tournament.
  • Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, and Trent Boult can come out as the top bowlers of the tournament.
  • Fast bowlers play an important role at venues like Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch, and Wellington, where most of the matches will be played.
  • Generally, the grounds are short in New Zealand, so we expect to see many high-scoring contests.

Super Smash 2023-24 – Overview

  • The 2023-24 Super Smash T20 will be held from December 19 to January 28, 2024.
  • There are in total six teams participating: Auckland, Canterbury, Central Districts, Northern Knights, Otago, Wellington.
  • The six captains are: Sean Solia (Auckland Aces), Cole McConchie (Canterbury Kings), Dane Cleaver (Central Stags), Jeet Raval (Northern Brave), Dean Foxcroft (Otago Volts), Nick Kelly (Wellington Firebirds).
  • All the games will be played across 10 venues: Eden Park Outer Oval (Auckland), Basin Reserve (Wellington), Seddon Park (Hamilton), Hagley Oval (Christchurch), Fitzherbert Park (Palmerston North), Molyneux Park (Alexandra), Pukekura Park (New Plymouth), Bay Oval (Mount Maunganui), McLean Park (Napier), University Oval (Dunedin).
  • Total 30 games will be played in the league stage in a double round-robin format followed by a solitary eliminator and then the final.
  • In contrast to the playoffs in the IPL and BBL, the Super Smash tournament has a single eliminator (termed the “elimination final”) followed by the final. The table-topping team advances directly to the final. The teams that end up in second and third places will compete in the elimination final, and the victorious team will qualify for the final.
  • India is not officially broadcasting the 2023-24 Super Smash; that said, you will be able to livestream all the matches via FanCode.
  • A detailed Super Smash 2023-24 schedule can be found over at Cricbuzz.

Teams Overview

Before you get on to Super Smash betting, here's a rundown of all the teams participating in the tournament in 2023-24.

1. Auckland Aces

Auckland-aces-logo

  • Captain: Sean Solia
  • Overseas players: Louis Delport
  • Best performance: Champions in 2006-07, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2015-16
  • 2022-23 Standing: Bottom of the table
  • 2022-23 Leading runscorer: Robert Roux O'Donnell (210)
  • 2022-23 Leading wicket-taker: Louis Delport, Sean Solia (10)
  • Key players: Mark Chapman, George Worker, James Neesham
  • Team analysis: The Aces had a disappointing last season when they finished at the bottom of the table. In 2023-24, however, Sean Solia will lead the squad, and they’ve also managed to rope in one of the best all-rounders in T20 cricket, James Neesham. Auckland’s biggest strength is their power-packed batting lineup along with capable bowlers. That said, four players are part of the national squad and will join the Auckland Aces only after the ongoing NZ-BAN series.

2. Canterbury Kings

Canterbury-kings-logo

  • Captain: Cole McConchie
  • Overseas players:
  • Best performance: Champions in 2005-06
  • 2022-23 Standing: Runner-up
  • 2022-23 Leading runscorer: Chad Bowes (359)
  • 2022-23 Leading wicket-taker: Zakary Foulkes, Angus McKenzie, William O'Rourke (12)
  • Key players: Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Kyle Jamieson
  • Team analysis: Last year, Canterbury Kings finished runners-up for the third straight season. Daryl Mitchell and Kyle Jamieson have signed new contracts with the Kings. Importantly, three players are part of the Kiwi ODI and T20I side and will join the squad after the Bangladesh series. The Canterbury Kings are the favourites to win the tournament this time around.

3. Central Stags

Central-stags-logo

  • The Central Stags finished fourth last season. This time too, they do not have much chance of making it to the knockout stages.
  • Their bowling department has depth, but it was the batting department that let them down last season.
  • This season too, their squad lacks the proper balance to win the title.
  • Key players are Seth Arnold Rance, Doug Bracewell, and Tom Bruce.

4. Northern Brave

Northern Brave Logo

  • Captain: Jeet Raval
  • Overseas players: Tim Pringle, Matthew Fisher
  • Best performance: Champions in 2013-14, 2017-18, 2021-22, 2022-23
  • 2022-23 Standing: Winner
  • 2022-23 Leading run scorer: Katene Clarke (266)
  • 2022-23 Leading wicket-taker: Neil Wagner, Brett Hampton (10)
  • Key players: Mitchell Santner, Trent Boult, Kane Williamson
  • Team analysis: The defending champions will be eyeing a third successive championship, with Kane Williamson and Trent Boult the two huge signings for the Brave this season. The team has the finest white-ball players in their ranks, along with nine capped players, making them the top contender to win in 2023-24. That said, six players part of the squad will be on national duty and will miss the opening contests.

5. Otago Volts

Otago-volts-logo

  • Captain: Dean Foxcroft
  • Overseas players: Travis Muller
  • Best performance: Champions in 2008-09, 2012-13
  • 2022-23 Standing: 2nd
  • 2022-23 Leading runscorer: Dean Foxcroft (424)
  • 2022-23 Leading wicket-taker: Michael David Rae (16)
  • Key players: Hamish Rutherford, Glenn Phillips, Jacob Duffy
  • Team analysis: The Otago Volts faced a setback in the eliminator round and finished as the third-best team in the tournament last year. The team awarded contracts to 16 players this time, though, and made three massive signings ahead of the 2023–24 season: Glenn Philipps, Jacob Duffy, and Hamish Rutherford. With a squad that is well-rounded with a blend of seasoned and emerging players, the Volts are going to give other competitors a run for their money.

6. Wellington Firebirds

Wellington-firebirds-logo

  • Captain: Nick Kelly
  • Overseas players: Muhammad Abbas, Logan Van Beek, Nick Greenwood
  • Best performance: Champions in 2014-15, 2016-17, 2019-20, 2020-21
  • 2022-23 Standing: 4th
  • 2022-23 Leading runscorer: Troy Johnson (163)
  • 2022-23 Leading wicket-taker: Nathan Smith (10)
  • Key players: Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Logan Van Beek
  • Team analysis: The Firebirds had a disappointing last season, where they finished fifth with three wins and five losses. That said, Wellington has the best batting and bowling lineup in the tournament this time, with Devon Conway returning to the fold after missing out last season. Importantly, the Firebirds have versatility and depth in their squad, which makes them a top contender to win the championship. However, four players will miss the first few games owing to the ongoing Bangladesh series.
