Euro 2020 Betting Tips and Predictions

The European Championship is the Holy Grail of international football in Europe, and by far the most glamorous from the stable of UEFA.

England are huge favourites heading into Euro 2020 given the abundance of talents at their disposal. The core of the Three Lions from the last couple of years is still very much intact and there is a deluge of talents coming through the ranks. They are looking to push their way into Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro Championship 2020. A huge chunk of England’s squad will be players that are currently playing in English teams, so if you are already familiar with Premier League betting, you will understand why they are pre-tournaments favourites.

Current Champions, Portugal, are also in the running for the Euro 2020 title. They stunned host France in 2016, and they will be looking to become the second team to defend their title after Spain. Cristiano Ronaldo is still very much within the setup and he is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The Portugal national team may not boast of a plethora of talents like Belgium and England, but they do have their fair share of gifted footballers.

Manchester United midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, is a man who we will keep an eye on. He has been mercurial for the Premier League giants since his winter transfer from Sporting Lisbon to the North of England to team up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. Bruno, alongside the likes of Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota and Joao Felix, who plays in the La Liga with Atlético Madrid, can rise to the occasion whenever they are called upon. Fernando Santos’ men are Dark Horses for Euro Championship 2020 and they have been touted as a possible winner at a staggering 18.0 odds by Unibet.

Spain are another side with a shout going into Euro 2020. They are arguably the most successful nation in the history of the European Championship with trophies to their name. They won the first of their three titles in 1964 on home soil, before two consecutive triumphs in 2008 and 2012. While the Spaniards may appear to be struggling at the moment, their performance in major championships in the last decade is a clear indication that they’re up for this task.

Germany have also enjoyed success on the continental stage with three titles. Currently, their squad is a blend of experience and youth and this will be handy when hostilities begin in the Euros 2020. They have some of the best young players playing in major leagues across Europe including the Bundesliga.

Current World Champions, France, will have their gaze fixated on the trophy this time. They have some of the best talents in European football within their ranks and Didier Deschamps will be counting on the likes of Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann to carry the Les Blues on their backs.

Euro 2020 provides numerous betting opportunities which will keep punters entertained while it lasts. Below are some of the European Championships betting options to consider.

Betting on Outright Winner for Euro 2020

In this type of bet, a wager is placed on a team to emerge the eventual winners of the tournament, rather than the outcome of a single match. Outright bets are generally placed before hostilities begin, but they can also be placed after the start of the tournament, but the odds are likely to be lower.

Recommended Betting Site for Outright Winner of Euro 2020: Betway

Betting on Group Winners

All the 24 teams participating in the Euros have been drawn into six different groups. And you can bet on the team or teams with the brightest chances of finishing top of their respective groups. You only have to place a wager on a team to emerge the winner of a group by amassing the most number of points in the group.

Recommended Betting Site for Group Winner: Unibet

Bet on Team to be Eliminated in the Group Stage

This betting option is uncomplicated and it allows you to wager on a team that will not go past the group stage at Euro 2020.Usually, the bet is placed on the underdogs in a group not to go beyond the group stage.

Recommended Betting Site for Elimination in the Group stage of Euro 2020: 888sport

Bet on Euro 2020 Top Scorer

The top scorer market is quite popular in football betting, and Euro 2020 provides yet another opportunity for punters to maximize their winnings. This is a thrilling betting option. Every goal scored adds to the excitement of betting on other markets aside from the outcome of a game.

If you know anything about Serie A betting, Romelu Lukaku who has been scoring a torrent of goals for Inter Milan will readily come to mind. Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane are also some of the favourites to emerge the top marksman.

Recommended Betting Site for Euro 2020 Top Scorer: Betwinner

Bet on Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament

This is another betting option that is not dependent on the outcome of a match, but rather on the performance of a player throughout the Euro Championship. A player who shows outstanding form during the competition is named the best player of a tournament. So you can bet on a player who could go on to light up Euro 2020.

Enthusiasts of cricket betting in Asia won’t have a hard time understanding how this works, as they would have been used to betting on the player of the Cricket tournaments using the best betting sites in Bangladesh, India and other countries in the region.

Tournament Structure for Euro 2020

Since its introduction in the 1960s, the tournament has continued to grow in terms of popularity and followership. The competition between participating teams is fierce and the fact that the tournament is staged every four years makes it a highly coveted trophy.

Euro 2020 is different in that there is a departure from the normal hosting format. In 2012, the UEFA announced that the competition will be held in multiple cities across Europe to celebrate its 60th anniversary. However, hosting rights will not guarantee an automatic spot for the national team of the hosting nation. Matches of the European Championships will be played in 12 cities, and this edition is unique because Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used for the first time in the history of the competition.

The format for Euro 2020 will be the same as Euro 2016, meaning there will be six groups comprising of four teams each. The group winners and runner-ups of each group, as well as the best third-placed teams, will progress to the round of 16.

The 16 teams that progress will be rewarded with a place in the next round, which is aptly dubbed the Round of 16. This is where the knockout phase of the competition begins. The teams that win their Round of 16 matches go to the quarterfinals with eight teams left. The remaining eight will face-off to determine the semi-finalists, which will eventually be down to the two teams that will slug it out for the Euro 2020 title in Wembley.

History of the European Championships

The European Championship was first held in 1960, but the idea was conceived as far back as 1927 by French man Henri Delaunay who proposed a competition for European national teams.

The competition was originally known as the European Nations Cup before it re-christened in 1968. Germany and Spain are the most successful teams in the history of the European Championship, with three titles each, whereas France has two titles and the defunct Soviet Union, Denmark, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Netherlands all have one title each.

Spain became the only nation to defend its title in 2012 when Poland and Ukraine jointly hosted the competition. The German national team has a stellar record at the European Championship with the greatest number of matches at the Euros (49) and they have also accounted for the most goals (72).

The number of teams participating in the European Championship was increased to 24 in 2016 and the format is set to be retained for Euro 2020.
