The UEFA European Champions League is the premier competition for elite European football teams. When it was first played in 1955 it was known simply as the European Cup and was won by Real Madrid, who would go on to win the first five tournaments. Today, after its glamorous relaunch in 1992, it has boomed into the biggest domestic football competition on earth and Champions League betting has become a very big deal indeed.

UEFA Champions League Betting Tips
German giants Bayern Munich are the ultimate defending champions, after winning against Paris St Germain in the 2020 final. Such form has seen them swiftly installed as the European Champions League betting favourite. Despite a slow start to the new season, Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola who is one of the few players to win the Champions League as both player and manager, are the second favourites. The Citizens are off the pace at home but qualified from the groups stage with ease and will certainly be a team to avoid.
Third favourites Liverpool have a very strong European Cup pedigree and will always be a danger but have been severely hampered by a string of long-term injuries to key personnel. With Spain’s big two struggling for form in the new season, Juventus, powered by Cristiano Ronaldo, have moved to fill the void and, with a favourable last 16 draw could prove to be very dangerous come the new year.
It seems strange to be writing a Champions League betting preview and ignoring the claims of Real Madrid and Barcelona but these two are currently shadows of their former selves and way off the pace domestically. While Los Blancos have been handed a nice draw against Atalanta, Barca have a much trickier visit to the French capital for a reunion with Neymar Jr. Barca, even with the Argentinian genius that is Leo Messi, could well come unstuck here.
Popular UEFA Champions League Betting Tips
Champions League betting, like a lot of football betting, is a wide and varied marketplace. Because there are two stages – group and knockout – bettors have the opportunity to bet on multiple outcomes of the various phases. Champions League betting markets, such as group stage table toppers, open up as well as match day betting, goal scoring betting and outright to win the Champions League betting, all of which, more often than not, provide excellent bettor’s value.
Outright Winner of the Champions League Betting
An outright winner’s bet is merely a punt on the team that you believe will win the UEFA European Champions League that season. It is a simple bet to make and to understand. To make this Champions League bet, you simply pick the team that you have a strong feeling for, or even support, and put some money on their chances of success. If they win, so do you.

Group Win of the Champions League Betting
The purpose of this Champions League bet is to predict the winner of one of the Champions League groups. So, for example, if you think that 13 times champions Real Madrid will win in a group containing Ajax, Dynamo Kiev and Olympiakos, then you simply predict that through your online betting slip. If you wanted, you could attempt to predict the winner of up to all eight groups and put them in an eight selection or less accumulator.

Top Goal Scorer of the Champions League Betting
As the Champions League season progresses, certain players, usually those playing at the top clubs, will score enough goals to find themselves top or near the top of the leading goal scorer charts. If you believe that you have an idea which player this might be, such as Robert Lewandowski or Mohammed Salah for example, pop them on to your betting slip and choose a stake you are happy with.
It is also a particularly good bet for live betting in-play as one hat-trick can be all it takes to set someone on the path to top scorer. Like a predicted top run maker bet in cricket, if you see someone have a particularly high scoring performance, it might be worth betting quickly in order to back your pick before his price drops.

Winning Nationality Team of the Champions League Betting
A bet such as this is a wager on the country that the winning team hails from. Of course, the chances of the winning team coming from the nations of Spain, England, Italy or Germany are much higher than from other countries. Not only are they from superior leagues but they also have more entrants. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 2004 to find the last time a team not from these nation’s won the UEFA European Champions League and, since the modern tournament began, only three teams outside of these countries have ever lifted the crown.

Tournament Structure for the UEFA Champions League
The UEFA Champions League is contested by 32 teams who are then separated into eight groups each of which contain four teams. The 32 teams involved in the first round group stage include six winners from each playoff qualifying round, high finishers from all the domestic leagues across Europe (these vary in number) and the previous season’s Europa League Champion.
During the group stage, each team within the group plays each other twice, the first one at home and once more away. Three points in total are awarded for a win, one point is awarded for a draw, while there are zero awarded for a loss. From these groups, the top two from each will qualify for the last 16, which is a knockout stage.
Teams finishing third in the group will drop out of the UEFA Champions League but will be allowed to participate in the UEFA Europa League when European football resumes in February. Fourth place finishers are eliminated from all competitions.
After the group stage has finished in early December, European football will take a two month winter break before resuming in mid-February. When the Champions League resumes, the format has become four rounds of knockout, two leg football. These are the round of 16, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and then the Final, the last of which is played at a pre-agreed neutral venue.
If teams cannot be separated by a victory, away goal advantage is applied before games go to extra time and/or penalties. The Champions League trophy can be permanently retained by any club that wins it five times. So far, only Real Madrid, AC Milan, Liverpool and Bayern Munich have achieved this.
History of the UEFA Champions League
While the first ever European Cup was staged in 1955, the Champions League, the European Cup’s reinvention, was held for the first time in the 1992/93 season. Whereas previously, the competition was purely knockout, the new format resembled the FIFA World Cup where it contained a first round, four team group stage. The idea was designed to ensure that the biggest clubs in Europe would progress to the next phase thus creating an abundance of glamour ties while placating desires for a European super league.
The country who has provided the most winners is England, who have seen five different teams lift the trophy, but it is Spain who have collected the most trophies thanks exclusively to the successes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Today, not unlike the Indian Premier League, it is one of the most watched sporting competitions on the planet.
